United Kingdom | Entering A Highly-Competitive Market

With a long-standing history and love for all things sports and betting, your new iGaming business will find its home in the UK. With a plethora of online and mobile users, as well as in-person shops still being prevalent throughout the UK, your business will find ample pools of bettors.

Altenar has gained operational and general knowledge of the sports betting industry within the UK having provided sportsbook services to a host of operators in the space and taking part in UK-based events like ICE London.

With a wealth of knowledge and experience informing its technology solutions, Altenar is one way to ensure your success.

So, with this in mind, let’s take a look at some of the regulatory requirements for entering the UK’s betting industry.

As an ISO27001-certified sportsbook solution provider, Altenar resonates and understands the need for regulation within the gaming sphere, and how this type of regulatory requirement can bolster the entertainment value associated with the sports betting and iGaming market.

So, what does an iGaming business need to be able to work, operate and thrive in the UK’s betting market?

Legislation introduced in April 2017, the Gambling (Operating Licence and Single-Machine Permit Fees) Regulations 2017 (SI No 303, 2017), created B2B-specific “host” subcategories:

  • casinos (game host);
  • bingo (game host);
  • general betting (host) (real events); and
  • general betting (host) (virtual events).

However, these licences are subject to various requirements, including:

  • the company must hold a gambling software operating licence; and
  • the company must not contract with players directly

The regulatory body, UKGC, allows the following games of chance:

  • betting (live, in-play, fixed-odds and pari-mutuel, betting exchanges and intermediaries)
  • bingo
  • casino
  • fantasy sports
  • gaming machines
  • gambling software
  • Lotteries
  • Poker

Additionally, for sports betting specifically the UKGC ask for numerous licences, some of which include:

  • Non-remote general betting standard operating licence
  • Non-remote general betting limited operating licence
  • Remote general betting standard real events licence
  • Remote general betting standard virtual events licence
  • Remote betting host real events licence
  • Remote betting host virtual events licence
  • Remote general betting limited licence

Not only this but numerous efforts are made and required to prevent and report any instances of match-fixing: The SBIU is a unit within the Gambling Commission that traces this behaviour. As an IBIA member, Altenar is actively involved in trying to keep betting activities above board for all!

Malta | Blooming In An iGaming Haven

As the home of Altenar’s headquarters, Malta is a haven for sports betting and iGaming in general, and is one of the world’s centres for success for the iGaming industry. As a result the country is vastly welcoming to new business and innovation within the field and for this reason, many operators and providers flock to the island for success.

Below is a list of regulatory must-knows for those looking to enter Malta’s iGaming space.

The MGA (Malta Gaming Authority) Allows the following games of chance:

  • online betting;
  • bingo;
  • casino;
  • lotteries;
  • fantasy sports;
  • poker; and
  • social gaming.

Types of Licences

As a sportsbook software provider, Altenar has ample experience in being regulation compliant and wants to share some of the requirements you’ll need to participate in Malta’s iGaming landscape. As one of Altenar’s homes, the sports betting solutions provider knows Malta and its betting landscape well. The MGA may issue the following licences:

A gaming services licence – a business-to-consumer (B2C) licence to offer or carry out a gaming service. A B2C licence may constitute any one or more of the following game types:

  • Type 1 gaming services – casino-type games.
  • Type 2 gaming services – games of chance played against the house, the outcome of which is determined by the result of an event or competition
  • Type 3 gaming services – games of chance not played against the house - poker, bingo, betting exchanges and other commission-based games.
  • Type 4 gaming services – controlled skill games.
  • A critical gaming supply licence – a business-to-business (B2B) licence to provide or carry out a critical gaming supply that is indispensable in determining the outcome of a game or games forming part of a gaming service, and/or is an indispensable component in the processing and/or management of essential regulatory data.
  • A corporate group licence – B2B or B2C corporate group licences may be issued to a corporate group that includes more than one company within its structure.

Duration of Licences

A standard licence term, whether original or renewed, is ten years, whilst a recognition notice is valid for one year. A recognition notice is a notice issued by the MGA whereby an authorisation issued by another member state of the EU or EEA, or a state that is deemed by the MGA to offer safeguards largely equivalent to those offered by Maltese law, is recognised as having the same effect as an authorisation issued by the MGA to provide a gaming service or gaming supply in or from Malta.
