Artificial intelligence is taking the world by storm. As more applications, code, and platforms integrate AI into everyday use, what are the global attitudes toward this advancement?

Altenar, a sportsbook software provider, explores how findings from the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe and the University of Tokyo’s Institute for Physics of Intelligence help us understand how AI-based products and services may be received by bettors, players, and the general public.

AI’s knowledge-based definition of intelligence has important implications. If performance is driven primarily by acquired knowledge rather than raw brainpower, then strong performance in any task depends heavily on access to sufficient information.

The study conducted by the two institutes focused on three primary applications of AI: (1) AI-generated singers, (2) AI-driven customer purchases, (3) AI-powered autonomous weapons, and (4) predictive policing. The study compared public attitudes toward these scenarios across Japan, Europe, and the United States.

AI is being applied across a wide range of industries, prompting both optimism and concern among the public. Ethical policies vary by region. In Japan, guidelines emphasize regulation and easing public anxiety. In the U.S., they focus on maximizing AI’s societal benefits while acknowledging long-term risks. In Europe, policies emphasize individual rights and responsibilities.

Japan

  • Legal concerns around AI-driven shopping tools
  • Ethical, legal, and societal issues related to AI-controlled weapons

Europe

  • Ethical and social concerns related to AI-generated singers
  • Ethical concerns around AI used for shopping assistance
  • Ethical concerns regarding AI-controlled autonomous weapons

United States

  • Ethical and social concerns related to AI-generated singers
  • Ethical, social, and legal concerns surrounding AI used in criminal detection and enforcement

Despite varying concerns, the study concluded that the dominant global attitude toward AI is centered on maximizing its social benefits—a view increasingly reflected in the sports betting industry through AI and machine learning applications, such as virtual betting and the growth of global online platforms.
