Altenar’s CFO, John Quaye, understands the importance and parallels between sports and business—and how sponsoring local events, such as the upcoming football match between FC Isle of Man vs. Vauxhall Motors (January 21) and the Isle of Man Half and Full Marathon (August 13), creates valuable opportunities for the local community while promoting a healthy work-life balance.
Interestingly, founded in 2019, F.C. Isle of Man is a semi-professional football club based in Douglas, Isle of Man, competing in the North West Counties League Premier Division (the 9th tier of English football).
The team played their inaugural home match at The Bowl and triumphed over Guernsey F.C. to win the newly established Skipton Cup. As a club, they cover travel and hotel expenses for visiting teams and officials—highlighting a strong commitment to development and progress within the English league system.
The Manx Marathon began in 1977 on a course in Ballasalla, located in the southern part of the island, before moving to its current route in Ramsey in 1980. That year saw the first women’s race, with Margaret Lockley setting the fastest time at 2:53:15. The men’s record, 2:27:42, was set by Steve Kelly in 1983.
Altenar’s resident marathon runner, John, has completed the race five times and was the Manx champion in 2019.
Here’s what John had to say ahead of these Altenar-sponsored community events:
1. What is the importance of events like these for local communities?
“FC Isle of Man is a relatively new organization, being the first team from the Isle of Man to join the English League system, while the Isle of Man Marathon and Half Marathon is a long-standing event.
“FC Isle of Man gives local footballers the chance to play at a higher level and potentially progress through the English Leagues, all while attracting strong local support. The Isle of Man Marathon remains the island’s only annual road marathon—it's a true community event that also attracts runners from around the world.”
2. Why is it important for companies like Altenar to sponsor these events?
“Without corporate sponsorship, many local events and organizations would face financial challenges. Ultimately, it's our staff and their families who benefit from a strong social and community network. Sponsorship also reflects Altenar’s commitment to work-life balance and to encouraging success in any path our people choose.”
3. How long have these events been running, and how have they impacted the local community?
“As someone who played football locally (now retired!) and is a regular marathon runner, supporting these events is a natural fit for me. Football and running are lifelong passions.”
4. You initiated the idea to sponsor events in areas where Altenar operates—what inspired this?
“I believe Altenar should actively contribute to the communities where it operates. Sponsorship is just one way to be involved and give back.”
5. Sports seem to play a big role in your life. What are the benefits of joining local sports groups, and do you see any crossover into the world of sports betting or related pastimes?
“Sports are naturally aligned with Altenar’s work. We're passionate about athletics, and supporting local sports is a meaningful way to give back.”
“Personally, team sports have taught me valuable lessons that apply to business—you need to collaborate, play to everyone’s strengths, and stay focused on a shared goal. Marathon running, though more solitary, teaches resilience and perseverance—important qualities both in and out of the office.”
