In a conversation with Altenar’s Marina Zacharopoulou, it became clear that the evolution of AI in recent years has significantly impacted and improved the world at large.
“For me, 2020 was a pivotal year for humanity,” Marina shared. “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we became familiar with terms like AI, digital transformation, algorithms, virtual sports, and data analytics!”
Marina continued, “We even saw the EU attempt to regulate AI through the proposed AI Act — and the big question remains: can it be effectively regulated?”
Marina reflected further on the nature of AI, questioning, “What is AI, really? There’s still no universal definition, but we could say it’s the simulation of human intelligence by machines — especially computer systems. And no, I’m not talking about robot vacuums! I’m referring to data and algorithms. Algorithms are like recipes, and we feed them data — and more data — to generate the analysis we need.”
She highlighted the advantages of artificial intelligence, saying, “With AI, we can prevent fraud, detect match-fixing, and automate compliance with anti-money laundering regulations. At Altenar, we fully embrace these applications to enhance the user experience while ensuring compliance with diverse jurisdictional requirements.”
Marina added, “I’d say we bring theory into practice. AI is about interpreting data, analyzing it, and synthesizing it. Still, AI presents risks and must always follow an ethical, human-centered approach. At Altenar, we strongly believe AI can help operators, providers, and regulators raise standards in responsible gambling by using less data — but with more precision and effectiveness.”
She concluded with, “AI will be a major catalyst for change in sectors like online gambling, which are already moving into the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0).”
